Nick Mehta shares his thoughts on Benioff's speaking abilities. He brings to light how Benioff is inclusive and infectious, insisting on the "you" instead of "our company," creating a sense of community rather than a corporation. He creates an environment where customers and users want to learn and talk to each other and are excited to hear more. Benioff is constantly evolving salesforce.com to adhere to new trends and needs and isn't afraid to adapt or imitate new technology such as Facebook. While presenting, Benioff is confrontational, taking small jabs at people such as Bill Gates or companies like Oracle, which proves that Salesforce is more of a revolution against "old guard CEOs who don't get the social enterprise." All in all, Mehta has been impressed with Benioff and salesforce.com's success and true passion for the community.

Gertner's research suggests that SaaS is now worth $12.1 billion worldwide. "Increasing familiarity with the model, continued oversight on IT budgets, and the growth of PaaS developer communities and interest in cloud computing are now driving adoption forward," says Sheron Mertz, a Gartner researcher. In North America alone, SaaS is worth $7.7 billion, with a predicted growth of $12.9 billion by 2015.

Another Benioff article; they are just flocking in because of the post-Dreamforce high. In this one, Wainewright discusses Benioff's argument that if enterprises don't embrace social media, they are going to fall behind. During London's Cloudforce this past week, Benioff was asked to comment on what is going to happen to companies that do not embrace the social enterprise. Benioff's response was straight to the point, "They're not going to be around in five or six years. The world is just gonna snap them in the neck." Whether this response was a little harsh is debatable, but does it hold truth? I particularly like Wainewright's point at the end, "if you don't have a strategy to the cloud, you'll still lose the race in the end." This holds a lot of truth for the social enterprise, too. If you don't set a strategy, goals, or take the time to learn how to properly use it, you might as well just forget about becoming a part of it.

Some new additions to Chatter in Winter '12 to look forward to. ChatterActivity tells you the number of posts/comments/likes on posts made by the user; ChatterConversation, ChatterConversationMember, and ChatterMessage all represent private messages within members. Lots to look forward to for Winter '12.

Klimoff offers some advice before moving to the cloud. Before making the transition, make sure you consider why and how you are going to benefit from the cloud. For example, break down your IT processes and applications and think about what benefits you want to receive from them by transitioning to the cloud. Analyze data access patterns, security domains, availability and reliability; make sure you look into these before uncovering any issues in the future. Finally, calculate the total cost of moving to the cloud, whether it saves you money or costs more. I would add, too, to consider looking up case studies of other cloud stories, just to understand how it could benefit your company; this way, you are going into the cloud knowing what you can get out of it.

As Marc Benioff pointed out this week at Dreamforce, the social enterprise is here, right now. It can be used to find out who your customers are and what they like, or even to create an employee social network within your business. Find out what's new with Chatter and the Sales Cloud through the link below.

Missed Benioff's kickoff keynote? This article runs through the gist of it. Benioff's goal is to get companies involved in the Social Enterprise. To do this, companies must develop a social media profile to monitor their customer's needs and wants, create an employee social network so employee's can exchange information and collaborate internally, and lastly, companies need to develop a Customer Social Network and a Product Social Network, which would be specific to that company or product, such as Toyota Friend. If companies do not start taking advantage of what social media has to offer, they are going to fall behind.

When the internet came into our lives 15 years ago, people were saying it would change everything, and it has. Now, cloud computing is going to change everything in the next 10 years. We will reach a point where all applications are delivered over the cloud, and CD software installation will be obsolete. Consumer needs are changing, we are all adapting to rely on the internet and the cloud to store our information, to run our business, to keep in touch with our friends and family. These changes over the next decade will be subtle and hardly noticeable, but like the article states, "we will wake up one day, look around and realize that the old ways have faded away."

Earlier this month, Salesforce.com quietly acquired Navajo Systems, an Israeli cloud security encryption vendor. This acquisition will ease future cloud security concerns, which is a popular discussion and fear when it comes to moving to the cloud. "Customers are increasingly wary of storing corporate data in the cloud and expect certain guarantees that the data will be safe and protected when it is accessed," and encrypting data will be the standard for easing those fears.

Different companies have different needs for cloud computing. However, these three are universally important aspects to any business. The cloud is cost efficient, provides on demand utility, and is the way of the future. The cloud is estimated to increase 200% by 2015, therefore "it is time to embrace the future."

Speed is the second most debated topic in cloud computing, but is it really an issue? A UK web performance specialist, Intechnica, conducted some research and reports that cloud speed is, "not necessarily about which infrastructure they choose to place their cloud in." In the report, Intechnica compares the performance of cloud applications (Windows Azure, Amazon AWS, and VMWare) to a physical server and found that "the cloud can be just as fast if not faster than conventional hosting options." The UK company encourages others to understand that there is no right answer to cloud servers- take time in figuring out your cloud needs, and choose the server that best fits. "Not all cloud solutions are the same," and need to be considered separately to "achieve optimum performance."

General Services Administration moved all 17,000 employees from IBM's Lotus Notes software to Gmail. This switch will "cut costs in half over a five-year contract period, partly by reducing equipment and staffing needs." This makes GSA one of the first of about 15 agencies to move to cloud-based email.

Microsoft poses the idea of placing servers into home and offices to not only produce greater energy output, but to warm our homes. Micosoft's report states, "We propose to replace electric resistive heating elements with silicon heating elements, thereby reducing societal energy footprint by using electricity for heating to also perform computation." This article, though, brings up the strong point that if this is such a great idea, why have we not tried it before? Moreover, we would like to point out one minor detail: what about the summertime?

This is a pretty basic article covering cloud computing, but still has some helpful content. The cloud offers scalability, allowing companies to only pay for the resources they use, rather than trying to estimate the numbers beforehand. Also, the cloud allows you to duplicate data resources, which means that you can access your data even if an issue with the server arises. Lastly, the cloud offers high availability for users, and is accessible from literally anywhere with an internet connection.

Dreamforce is coming up in five weeks, so expect to see @forcearchitects tweeting a lot about it. I particularly liked this post by Mike Gerholdt, in which he offers some simple solutions to checking out Dreamforce solo. An important part of Dreamforce actually happens before the event begins; you should coordinate with your company, establish Dreamforce goals, and make a list of what vendors you need to visit during the Cloud Expo. Moreover, I like that he points out that you should not worry if all of your session blocks aren't filled, "since it'll give you an additional chance to talk and network with people around you." I think that this is a fantastic point. You don't need to fill your whole day with sessions, because a large part of DF is networking. Having time to hang around and spark up conversations is a great idea. For more tips, definitely check out his post below.

Last week saw 30,000+ people converge on the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA for Dreamforce ‘10. The event was as big as promised and rightfully dominated the news in all things cloud.

Jeff Kaplan’s rundown is comprehensive, both in the headline events and announcements as well as in its aim. “Salesforce.com used the event to beat back the recent efforts of Oracle and Microsoft to gain a share of the Cloud Computing market with a new round of initiatives aimed at building on its phenomenal momentum and success.” He also examines the impact of several announcements, including the unveiling of Database.com, demonstrating salesforce.com’s dedication to the maturation of the force.com platform in the developer world.

Soaring Clouds at Dreamforce

Phil Wainewright examines the impact of Database.com on the competitive marketplace “as Marc Benioff throws salesforce.com’s cloud platform weight around.” Smaller PaaS competitors will have to work harder to differentiate themselves in this new landscape, he notes.

PaaS Bystanders Squished as Database Giants Spar

A day later, salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff announced the acquisition of Heroku, the Ruby based application development platform, a move that should add even more developer credibility to the platform.

Quietly, on Tuesday morning, FinancialForce acquired a PSA solution from application builder Appirio. “Importantly, this is the first complete ERP/PSA/CRM solution built on the same platform” and gives service organizations the ability to “run all of their core systems on a single solution.”

Reid Carlberg, developer evangelist for salesforce.com and excellent tweeter (@ReidCarlberg), delivers his roundup of the event and gives attention to some of the unique touches that made a 30,000 person event feel so personal, including his impromptu one-on-one sessions with fellow platform users, Reid monitoring Chatter to answer questions, and personal code consults, all of which inevitably led to him losing his voice. Reid embodies the enthusiasm and forward-thinking that everyone brings to Dreamforce and makes Dreamforce such a success.

Phil Wainewright examines the impact of Database.com on the competitive marketplace “as Marc Benioff throws salesforce.com’s cloud platform weight around.” Smaller PaaS competitors will have to work harder to differentiate themselves in this new landscape, he notes.

I was catching up on news the other day when I came across the 'Salesforce.com Makes WordPress Easy for Small Business & Nonprofits' post from the salesforce.com Blog. I was wondering what SFDC's angle was on this, so I checked out the post...and was immediately blown away by the 'Business Turnkey' theme. I found the design so stunning that I stayed up two nights in a row completely rebuilding the Delivered Innovation blog around it. The results are what you see here with the new 'Force Architects' blog.

You can view a setup video and download "Business Turnkey" from wordpress.salesforce.com. The contact form that we use on 'Force Architects' is a sidebar widget that you can use by downloading and installing the free 'WordPress-to-lead for Salesforce CRM' plugin; the form will submit Lead records directly to your Salesforce CRM org using the Web-to-Lead functionality that comes out-of-the-box from salesforce.com. Really cool stuff all around, and it feels like a good momentum builder as we get closer to Dreamforce '10!
